How Citizen Systems supports retailers and businesses in transitioning to compliance.
Spain is entering a new era of tax transparency. A bold national reform mandates the use of certified point-of-sale (POS) and invoicing systems, based on strict legal and technical standards.
Is it a challenge for retailers? Absolutely. But more importantly, it is a strategic opportunity to modernize POS infrastructures.
What the reform says
Starting in July 2026, businesses in the retail and hospitality sectors must comply with the following requirements:
- Use of certified software or POS systems compliant with Agencia Tributaria (AEAT) standards;
- Timestamping, digital signatures, and ticket chaining without any possibility of modification;
- Mandatory printing of a QR code on each ticket or invoice;
- Optional but strongly recommended: real-time data transmission via the Veri*Factu protocol.
Some companies will be affected as early as January 2026, while those already under the SII system or regional schemes like TicketBAI may be exempt.
Why a POS printer is essential
The final link in the fiscal system is the POS printer. It must now do more than just print a receipt; it must ensure:
- Perfect readability of QR codes;
- Smooth integration with certified software;
- Full traceability via an internal audit log;
- Protection against any data tampering;
- High performance, even with added fiscal elements on the receipt.
Citizen Systems’ experience: proven expertise
