Spain Fiscalisation: Tax Reform and the Opportunity to Modernise POS Systems

How Citizen Systems supports retailers and businesses in transitioning to compliance.

Spain is entering a new era of tax transparency. A bold national reform mandates the use of certified point-of-sale (POS) and invoicing systems, based on strict legal and technical standards.

Is it a challenge for retailers? Absolutely. But more importantly, it is a strategic opportunity to modernize POS infrastructures.

What the reform says

Starting in July 2026, businesses in the retail and hospitality sectors must comply with the following requirements:

  • Use of certified software or POS systems compliant with Agencia Tributaria (AEAT) standards;
  • Timestamping, digital signatures, and ticket chaining without any possibility of modification;
  • Mandatory printing of a QR code on each ticket or invoice;
  • Optional but strongly recommended: real-time data transmission via the Veri*Factu protocol.

Some companies will be affected as early as January 2026, while those already under the SII system or regional schemes like TicketBAI may be exempt.

Why a POS printer is essential

The final link in the fiscal system is the POS printer. It must now do more than just print a receipt; it must ensure:

  • Perfect readability of QR codes;
  • Smooth integration with certified software;
  • Full traceability via an internal audit log;
  • Protection against any data tampering;
  • High performance, even with added fiscal elements on the receipt.

Among Citizen's POS printers, several models already meet the strictest requirements:
CT-E351 / CT-E301 / CT-S851III / CT-S801III

  • Fast thermal printing
